Protecting Small and Local Businesses
Small businesses are the backbone of our high streets and local economy. Susan is fighting to make sure the UK Government treats them fairly.
Susan has called on the Government to cut VAT for hospitality businesses, a move that would drive economic growth, restore our high streets and give local businesses the boost they badly need.
In a recent Prime Minister's Questions, Susan raised the issue of a local business in Mid Dunbartonshire whose owner and three employees each earn less than £30,000 a year. Despite this, the business will pay over £36,000 to the Government this year in VAT, employers' national insurance and pension contributions. The owner contributes more to the Exchequer than she earns herself. Susan put it directly to the Prime Minister: "That is not fair, and it does nothing to encourage the entrepreneurship that our high streets and local economy depend on."
